do you think mcconnell and boehner are in the mood to cooperate with president obama? >> i do believe they're in a mood to cooperate. they've talked -- and speaker boehner's talked for a long time about a grand bargain, about a big deal, about trying to find some major solution going forward. but the senate hasn't acted on anything, so i think we have to be careful on just placing the blame on mcconnell or boehner. without adding in to this mix, senator harry reid who is running the senate and have failed to act on anything yet. >> will you support whatever short-term deal the republican leadership supports? >> i don't know what i'm going to support yet until i see it. the previous congressman you had on, raul, interesting enough, his office is right next to mine in longworth. the fact of the matter is we're going to have to find a place to come together. that the president has offered a 7% solution for a 100% problem. i was struck by the fact that not a single democrat supported speaker boehner's plan "b" when that was actually nancy pelosi's solution which was to rai

i think the key player is mitch mcconnell to watch. we're getting potentially more information about what is happening next. our capitol hill producer deidre walsh was there when some of the leaders returned and she spoke with nancy pelosi who said this meeting was constructive and candid. here's what is especially interesting. nancy pelosi told reporters that the president led a meeting that ended with senators reid and mcconnell trying to work something out between the two of them. now it seems like we've gone from a process that was president obama and speaker boehner and then today to five leaders back to two. and those two, for the moment, seem to be senator reid and senator mccon until. also, i had a source in senator mcconnell's office who said we should be getting a statement from the republican leader of the senate any time now. so that statement will tell us a lot, candy. >> it will. but we also know that even though it's in the senate hands now which is basically where speaker boehner tossed it when he couldn't get his plan

the republican leader, mitch mcconnell, really put the blame on democrats, but he did seem to indicate that there may be further negotiations that are ongoing here, possibly even as we speak. take a listen to mitch mcconnell earlier this afternoon. >> the truth is, we're coming up against a hard deadline here and as i said, this is a conversation we should have had months ago. and republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything senate democrats put forward, just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. >> so mcconnell there very much sounding in his remarks today like a man who was expecting a new offer, something from the president of the united states. what we know about the president is that he cut short his hawaii vacation, arriving in d.c. earlier today. and we're not aware of new developments from the president, but mcconnell seemed to telegraph that the president called him yesterday and now expecting that the president would make him some sort of offer at some point in the future. we haven't seen that yet. so, this story continues, melissa. >> so, it sou

why are you trying to make it more complicated than it is. >> is mitch mcconnell going to save the day? >> i don't know about that, but let me take issue. the republican conference in the house is very conservative. we are seeing a very conservative conference that may not coming to to vote on something, even if nancy pelosi can corral the democrats, they need to pick off republicans. we don't know if any of them would vote for something like this. john boehner is ready to strike a deal. i'm not sure many others are. in the senate we have seen a number of conservative republicans saying they would vote. >> 20 republican votes? >> at this point it's very hard to say. i think john boehner would probably be trying to go in that direction if he could. we haven't seen enough house republicans come out yet and say they would support tax increases. if you have tom coal who broke with his party leadership and the party ranks about three weeks ago or so. we haven't seen enough say they would. i don't know that that's the right deal for that to try to strike. >> one of the strategies that republ
